Weleda

In 1921 pharmacists and physicians gathered in Switzerland under the guidance of Dr. Rudolf Steiner to create a natural medicine and personal care company later called Weleda. Using pharmaceutical techniques combined with a spiritual approach, they formulated a truly innovative line of quality products based upon the study of relationships between the substances and processes of nature and the human being.

By cultivating plants using organic and biodynamic agricultural methods, harvesting them at peak times, and processing them with the utmost care, Weleda believes it is possible to retain a plant's inherent qualities and healing properties.

Weleda has grown over the years and now serves millions of satisfied customers worldwide. Although our product line and production capabilities have expanded greatly, our basic principle of maintaining the highest quality standards while strictly adhering to natural methods has remained. The products contained in these pages come to you imbued with nature's properties of enjoyment, beauty, healing, and life.

Dr. Steiner chose the name Weleda to honour the ancient tradition of Celtic women healers. He designed our logo to symbolize the act of giving and receiving which is represented by the outer part of our logo and the uprightness and truthfulness which is represented by the centre of the logo. The centre of the logo also represents the staff of Mercury - a venerated symbol of healing.

The Origins of the Name "Weleda"

"Weledas" or "Velledas" were Celtic wise women who guided their followers to an understanding of nature. Traces of them are found in Ireland, Germany and France. The last individual to bear the name Weleda was mentioned by the Roman historian Tacitus. According to Tacitus, Weleda was a healer priestess who, at the beginning of the Christian era, lived near a famous shrine by the river Lippe in Germany. She was a seer and prophetess respected by the Germanic tribes. She was taken prisoner by the Romans and died in Rome about 80 A.D.

First Aid, Sports, Aches & Pains

Pain is a feeling of distress, suffering or agony caused by the stimulation of specialised nerve endings. These nerve endings can perceive mechanical stress caused by trauma, extremes of hot and cold and the release of chemical substances, (such as histamine, potassium ions, acids and prostaglandins) which are released when cells are destroyed by damage. These substances can stimulate pain receptors or cause direct damage to the nerve endings themselves.

Most people have experienced pain from one source or another, whether it be a sports related injury such as bruising, tendinitis, broken bones or occupational overuse syndromes like RSI.

The myriad of symptoms associated with the pain include inflammation, emotional distress and bruising. The WELEDA range of medicines for muscle/tissue pain provide symptomatic relief from pain and promote the healing of damaged tissue, without the side-effects usually associated with anti-inflammatories.

This module includes all the remedies for first aid, ie natural antiseptic, burn and bite treatment, as well as sports injuries, aches and pains, including rheumatism and arthritis relief.

The three most essential products for a first aid kit are Arnica Cream, Hypercal Cream and Combudoron Gel.

All the Arnica products are suitable for sports problems, as well as the Tendinitis Cream, and Sports Massage Oil. And for aches and pains, think Arnica.

Colds and Flu Care

Introduction

Colds and the ‘flu are acute viral infections of the respiratory tract.

Influenza has a brief incubation period. The symptoms appear suddenly and while the virus enters the respiratory tract, it soon affects the entire body. The symptoms include fever, chills, headache, sore throat, coughs, gastro-intestinal disturbances, muscular pain, and neuralgia (nerve pain).

Susceptibility to a cold or the ‘flu is dependant on an individual's general state of health. Many people get exposed to the flu virus yet do not present with symptoms, due to their healthy lifestyles. Yet others will have poor resistance because of poor diet, continual stress or overexposure to environmental toxins. Stress and Fatigue Care

Introduction

Stress tends to disturb the normal functioning level of an organism whether it be physical or emotional, internal or external.

There are many kinds of stress which the body reacts to in different ways. There is acute stress, resulting from a situation that poses an immediate threat, such as a near accident. There is also chronic stress, such as that caused by changes in the body during pregnancy, acute and chronic diseases, changes in jobs, relationship difficulties, chemicals or other agents.

Exercise, nutritionally adequate food, being organised, having a positive attitude to the stress and making time to relax, laugh and enjoy life are all healthy ways to cope with stress.

In times of high stress, regular meals and hours of sleep are vital. A long walk, preferably at a beach or under trees is worthwhile. Try to avoid coffee and television, which stimulate the nervous system.

The WELEDA range of medicines for stress and fatigue have been formulated to provide symptomatic relief from stress and help restore the vitality of the body to assist in the overall healing process.
